Governing Board Impact Statement

The governing board is the schools ‘accountable body’ and is vital to the effectiveness of a school. The governing board has three key functions:

  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
  • Holding the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and direction

The Governing Board work with the head teacher to set the aims and objectives for the school; setting the policies and targets for achieving those aims and objectives. They monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making and they act as a critical friend.

At Padfield Community School the Governing Board is made up of two parents, one Local Authority Governor, one staff member, one Head Teacher and four Co-opted Governors.  The Governing Board is then split into two sub committees; Teaching and Learning and Resource. Please see the Committee Structure, which is reviewed each Autumn.

2016 – 2017

Our priorities on school improvement plan for 2016-2017 were as follows:

1.            To improve attainment and progress in phonics

2.            To improve attainment and progress in EYFS

3.            To improve provision to ensure good attainment and progress for vulnerable children with unmet attachment needs and Young Carers.

4.            To increase the amount of enrichment activities which complement the school curriculum

Impact

The Governing Board closely monitored provision and children’s progress in the target areas of phonics and EYFS each term to ensure that all planned actions were implemented. At the end of the year the number of children reaching the expected level in phonics had risen by 17% and the percentage of children reaching a good level of development in EYFS had risen by 27%.

The Governing Board has ensured that all staff were trained in the areas of unmet attachment needs and the needs of Young Carers. The school is now implementing new provisions and will apply to gain awards in these areas in 2017-2018

The Governing Board monitored enrichment opportunities each term and attended trips and visits to ensure that these enrich the school curriculum. The frequency of these opportunities has increased over the year.
